How Do Bloggers Make Money?
I get asked all the time from my readers “how do bloggers make money” and I wanted to share with you how I am able to generate thousands of dollars per month with my various blogs.
Now I created this post for anyone who is new to monetizing their blog or maybe you’ve already started to monetize your blog but you want to learn some different strategies and techniques and revenue streams.
I should also mention that none of this happened overnight. It took me about a year before I was able to consistently earn a thousand per month but that’s not to say that you won’t do it faster.
Setting expectations, having patience and putting in the work are all key components if you want to start making money with your blog. This isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme, this is a blueprint on how to monetize your blog and it’s how I started making a passive income.
My hope is that you’ll use this information in this article to monetize your blog as well. So with that being said let’s get started.
As you probably already know there are a variety of ways you can earn money online but the tips that I’m going to cover here are strictly for bloggers.
Some of these tips in the beginning may seem somewhat basic especially if you’ve already started your blog but I have a lot of readers that are just starting out so stay with me.
How Do Bloggers Make Money – Starting Your Blog
You need to start with a strong digital platform to earn revenue online. A blog not only serves as your content platform but it also serves as the launch pad for any type of monetization strategy so it’s extremely important that your blog foundation is strong and secure.
That’s why I use and recommend the WordPress platform along with Worthy Host web hosting. This isn’t a sales pitch, this is what I use for the majority of my projects and my clients as well.
WordPress is by far the most used and most popular platform out there, it’s also free. Roughly 30% of the entire internet is currently using WordPress as their blogging foundation as well as fortune 500 companies.
Creating Your Content
Now it’s time to work on what you’re going to blog about and pick a topic. Sometimes this can be the most difficult part however it’s probably the one thing that most people overlook whenever they’re starting a blog.
Your blog topic is probably the single most important aspect of your blog and this sounds like a no-brainer but if you want your readers to take you seriously you’re going to have a well-rounded understanding of what you’re blogging about.
Your blog topic should be a mix of something that you’re passionate about yet have a strong understanding of as well. Additionally you’ll need to determine whether or not there is even an audience for your topic.
Chances are there is but before you put a ton of time and effort into blogging you’ll want to make sure that it’s worth your time and that there’s a market for it.
You can do a quick google search of your topic to see if there’s an audience for it but this is just a preliminary research tactic. You can use keyword tools and Google Trends to get a more in-depth understanding of your topic.
Here are some quick tips to help you get started.
On your blog, are you going to be able to help the reader solve a problem, ease a pain or achieve a goal? If the answer is yes, you’re good to go.
Will your topic give you plenty of ideas so you can create content? You want to make sure that there’s enough interest that gives you the ability to create high quality content.
You’re not going to get paid if people aren’t visiting your blog and engaging with your content. Your content is what draws people in, it’s what keeps them engaged. It’s what builds that trust and it’s what keeps them coming back for more.
You may be asking yourself what does any of this have to do with monetizing a blog and the answer is everything. I know I sound like a broken record but none of this blog monetization strategy is going to work if you’re not creating value for your audience.
How Do Bloggers Make Money – Monetize Your Site
Using affiliate marketing to make money with your blog.
Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates aka you and me who are affiliates. This means that companies will give you a cut of their profits if you send them customers.
Best of all, with affiliate marketing you don’t need to create a product to sell. You simply recommend relevant products to your audience with affiliate links. Then whenever someone clicks on your affiliate link and makes a purchase you receive a commission for every sale.
Now depending on the company, the structure of the affiliate program and payouts will vary. For example, some companies will pay you just for sending them traffic and some companies will pay you only after a sale is made.
Either way affiliate marketing is by far one of the most popular and lucrative revenue streams when it comes to monetizing a blog.
Here are the main reasons why I use affiliate marketing.
You don’t need to create a product. You can be an affiliate for literally millions of products that are already created.
You don’t have to handle inventory unless you want to. You can deal strictly with digital products. You can also have recurring commissions every month for certain products. You don’t even have to worry about returns or customer service and it’s free to get started.
I’ve seen my affiliate earnings increase each and every month simply because I’m creating valuable content and getting more visitors each month.
Getting started with affiliate marketing is relatively simple. You can either sign up with an affiliate network like CJ Affiliates, Share a Sale, Amazon or Clickbank. These are the big ones but almost every company you know has an affiliate program nowadays.
You do need to make sure that whatever you decide to promote it is related to your niche topic. You don’t want to promote a fitness product if your blog is about Interior Design.
You want to make sure that the things that you are partnering with for affiliate marketing are things that you trust and that you personally enjoy.
You definitely don’t want to tell people that you love some sort of product that you’ve never used or that you actually hate, just so you can make some money.
Make money with your blog using ads.
You can just place ads on your website and get paid but I’ll say that if you’re a small blog or you’re just starting out you’re not going to make a whole lot with ads on your site.
This is likely to be a tiny bit of income but it is something that you can definitely look into. You can sign up to put ads on your site with Google Adsense.
To be honest, I think this is the last option I would use. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of bloggers that make great money from this but I don’t use them.
I just don’t like the fact that I would only be getting a small amount of money for a click and then when a visitor clicks he leaves my site. That’s not why I put all the effort into creating great content just for them to leave my site.
Plus, if I keep them on my blog I have other options that will pay me much more and you should as well.
Make money from your blog with sponsored posts
The third way that you can make money with your blog is through sponsored posts. This is when a company would sponsor you or sponsor one of your postings. Whether it be on your blog or social media, you share their product with your audience and you get money from them.
There are a couple ways that you can do this. The first is to sign up with a company that acts as a marketplace for influencers and companies looking to find influencers, so it matches you with those companies.
Tap Influence is one of the best and you can sign up and create an account. That way companies can see your profile, see how many followers you have and what your demographic looks like.
If they’re interested because their product fits with your topic then they’ll go ahead and reach out to you.
Another way that you can get sponsored posts is to reach out to companies yourself. Just reach out to a company and say “hey, I’m really interested in trying out your product and I was wondering if you ever partner with bloggers or influencers to share your product”.
Just share with them how many followers you have and what your blog is about. Tell them why you would be a good partner.
Work out a form of compensation whether it be free products, free trips or money. Just by showing some love of the product on your blog and other social media platforms you can get compensated.
Creating your own product to make money from your blog.
The fourth way that you can make money with your blog is to create your own product or service. You can create a class, course or ebook that teaches more about your blog topic.
Maybe you are a travel blog and so you decide to make a traveling notebook and sell those. You could be a musician and want to teach guitar lessons and create a membership site. The list is endless of what you can sell if you are serious about doing it.
If you provide free valuable content on your blog that your visitors love, you have developed the trust and relationship factor so when you offer your products or services your readers will take action on buying.
How Do Bloggers Make Money – Conclusion
These are the four main ways how bloggers make money. It will take research, it will take work but I am living proof and there are many others that make a good living making money from their blogs.
If you are new to blogging I would focus on affiliate marketing to start off with until you grow your audience. I know that trying to do all these things at once can seem a little bit overwhelming so just focus on one.
I hope you enjoyed this post and wish you the best on your new blog. Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll be more than happy to share more tips or check out some of my other articles.
