How To Cloak Your Affiliate Links With WordPress
Today I’ll be showing you how you can convert your affiliate links, clean them up and cloak them as well. This is perfect for those of you who are in the WordPress community that might be venturing into affiliate marketing.
You might want to offer services for your clients such as hosting services, themes to use or tools that will be helpful and you’ve noticed that people have this really clean link such as mikeerwin.com/hosting.
When someone clicks on that link it takes them to the offer, service, web page or wherever you want to redirect them to. So right here I have mikeerwin.com/best-themes.
I’m an affiliate for Elegant Themes so when people click that link it takes them directly to Elegant Themes and if someone purchases the product I would make a commission.
Now I’m going to show you how we can do this on your website using WordPress. In fact we’re going to be using the same exact plug-in and system that I use for this as well.
There’s thousands of companies millions of products out there you can promote. There’s Commission Junction, there’s Clickbank, there’s ShareASale and there’s tons of stuff you can promote. Simply pick a product that you trust.
So let’s go ahead and go to your wordpress dashboard and I’ll show you how you can create a nice looking affiliate link.
Creating Your Affiliate Link
As you scroll down on the left hand side of your dashboard you’ll see plugins and just click on add new. The one that I personally use on all my sites is Pretty Links so just type that in the search box on the right hand side.
It should be popping up really quickly and there you will see Short Links by Pretty Links. Go ahead and install and activate that it and once you do that you’ll see on the bottom left you have Pretty Links ready to go.
For beginners click on add a new link. The very first thing you see is we have redirection options so for those of you who are using the free version right here it says temporary and permanent.
Now the one that I personally use is temporary because you might want to change the permalink later. I’m going to use 307 temporary and below that we have the target URL.
This is where you’ll go to your affiliate program, grab your affiliate link and paste it in there. You want your URL only, not some banner code with a – div or – a ref, you don’t want that, you just want the URL link.
So right now you’re saying this is where I want people to go, this is where people will land when they click on my link. Now you need to decide what you want to call this pretty link.
You’ll want to call it something that relates to the product you’re promoting. In my example I promote Elegant Themes so I named it best themes.
After you’re done naming your pretty link right you can give it a title and notes. This is just for your personal use to help identify it for you because when you have hundreds of them it can get hard to recognize which link is which without titles or notes.
After that you have Advanced Options and I gotta be very honest, I don’t really use it. I mean you could add the nofollow perimeter which basically adds the nofollow link to it but I don’t think many of you guys are going to need it.
You’ll then see the tracking option and of course you want to leave it on. Generally this is all you need, you don’t need to do any of this other stuff, you don’t even need to go to the Advanced Options.
So anyways, once you’re done with that you’ll just click on Create and that’s it, your link is created. You’ll see the new link on the right hand side and you can copy it and paste it wherever you want.
People will then click it and it will redirect them to whatever page or whatever affiliate program your part of. This is the best way to create the links with WordPress. In fact I’ve been using Pretty Links for years now and and what I just shared is exactly how I do it.
Now if you click on Pretty Links on the left side of your dashboard you’ll see all of your affiliate program and links. It will actually show you what you’re promoting, it’ll show you the clicks, when it was created and also it’ll show you the exact link that is targeted.
Listen guys and gals, every once in awhile you’ll want to go back and see if your affiliate links are working. It’s a good idea to test your links here because sometimes the people that are making the affiliate program might change the page or change the URL.
If that happens and you don’t notice it quickly unfortunately you’re going to miss out on a lot of money.
